How To Grow Pothos On a Moss Pole: Step-By-Step Guide

But nowadays it is being suggested to train the pothos plant to climb up with the help of a moss pole.

Are Moss Poles good for Pothos?

Are you curious to know if moss poles are good for pothos? The answer is yes! They tend to gain the natural habitat of the pothos and grow up in tropical jungles, also connecting themselves with other plants and trees in the area to reach the sunshine. 

In its natural environment, pothos will grow amazingly by producing big-shaped leaves resembling the size of a human hand. When the plant begins to grow taller, its leaves will become larger. As you know, its vines develop rootlets in the support system, this plant has good root mass. 

The more the root moss, it will reflect more structures to collect nutrients and water and maintain healthy plants in the area. Also, It is suggested to use a trellis system for the plant, but it is not good as compared to the moss pole.

The Moss Pole helps the roots to invade the support system and adapt more and more nutrients for its growth. Last, but not least, the moss pole also feeds the plant with a good amount of humidity that benefits the tropical plants to grow at their best because they love humidity. 

Grow Pothos on a Moss Pole

Pothos plants require aerial roots to climb the trees and large branches of other plants surrounded by them. They are often called epiphytes. In this way, pothos grow upwards and attain good sunlight above the canopy of the trees. 

Moss poles or coco coir poles will provide support to the plant to climb up indoors. it will hold the moisture so that the aerial roots will tie themselves and secure themselves for support. 

How to Insert the Moss Pole? 

• Before proceeding, you have to soak the moss pole in the water to saturate it. 
• After that, insert the pole at the plant’s center depending on how the result you want at its end. 
• Gently add the moss pole to the Pothos plant’s pot. It should not damage the roots, so be cautious while doing so. 
• Repotting is the ideal time for the pothos plant to add a moss stick to it. It will help in reducing the root damage caused by the pole. 
• If the pothos have various vines, then use two poles in one large container. 
• If you have already grown the plant on a moss pole, it will require repotting. Do not remove the moss pole, attach the plant to the pole and replant it in the new pot like that only. 

How to Attach Pothos to a Moss Pole? 

When the plant is young and small, then is the right time to train it to climb a moss pole. You can also add moss poles to a larger and more mature pothos plant. Take the longest vind and wrap it gently around the moss pole. Do not force the stems to bend because they do not like to be.

Then, secure those vines to the moss pole by using velcro strips, wire, etc. Do not tighten it more to avoid damage to the plant. Aerial roots tend to grow so that they attach themselves to the moss pole. It will help the plant to hold growing wild in the area. 

You have to follow this with each vine. Then, the existing aerial roots need to be positioned in a way that the root nodes touch the moss pole. Then from these roots, the aerial roots will be grown. Keep misting the roots frequently to attach the roots easily. 

After the roots are secured on the moss pole, remove the wires if you are thinking of doing so. Pothos is being grown as hanging plants. It will look pretty in your area. If it’s growing too big in the basket, then it is required to repot the plant. Choose a fresh soil mix, wire, climbing stick, or bigger container.  

Keep Moss Pole Moist

Keep in mind to let the pole moist after the pothos have grown around them. Moist coco coir or moss pole will help the plant to make its aerial roots secure to support the plant. 

Pole is a great source of humidity and water for pothos plants. Despite this, you can water the plant. Keep misting the moss pole frequently for about 2 to 3 times a week. 

Last but not least, pour the water directly on the pole. It will be helpful for the plant if the humidity level is low or the moss pole is dry. It will help in raising the humidity level in the location.
