While roaming in my garden today, I wondered why I haven’t propagated blueberries in my garden. But it’s not too late. As you know blueberries are one of the favorite choices of all. Through seeds:

It is easy to propagate blueberries through the seeds. It is another way of doing so which will be easy for you. So, are you ready to know the process of propagating blueberries in your home garden with the help of seeds.

It is recommended to either purchase the seeds from the market or you can even extract the seeds from your berries too. Let’s know how to extract the seeds and then propagate blueberries through them:

Extraction of seeds:

First, you have to begin with the seeds that are frozen for 90 days in your freezer.
Then add a cup of berries about 3-quarters in a blender by putting some water to it.
Then blend it for a few seconds until it is mixed properly.
Keep the mixture aside so that it separates its pulp and its seeds.
After 5-10 minutes, you have to throw the pulp from it which will be floating in it. Repeat the process until the seeds get settled.
You have to spread the seeds in the paper towel by removing water from it.

Propagation through extracted seeds:

Choose a high tray and fill it with peat moss or sphagnum moss about 3 inches deep and sprinkle the seeds on its top keeping them 1 inch apart.
Pour another layer of peat moss into it. Provide it with 60 to 70 degrees temperature location, and cover the tray with any newspaper.
You will see the process of germination will take about 1 month.
By observing the sprouts from it, you have to remove the newspaper and place it in a sunny location so that it remains moist.
When the seedlings will grow about 2-3 inches long, remove each one if it carefully.
Then is the right time to transplant them to their pots. Choose a pot with 2-3 inches depth.
Make sure to add equal parts of peat moss, potting mix, and sand. Keep watering your plant so that it grows well.
After 2-3 weeks, you have to fertilize them with a liquid fettler and then you can transplant them in the ground or in the containers whichever is suitable.
Do it at the time of late fall or springtime for better results.

Through cuttings:

There are two methods when you propagate blueberries: hardwood cuttings and softwood cuttings. And many may remember that I always suggest propagating any plant with the help of using cuttings is the easiest way to do so. So, Let’s throw some light on both segments.

Hardwood cuttings

So, the foremost method of propagating through cuttings is the hardwood cuttings. Therefore, follow the below steps to come to know how to grow blueberries through it:

It is easy to propagate blueberries through hardwood cuttings. You have to choose the cuttings of last year’s plant at the time of late winter when the plant is not in its dormant stage.
Then choose a healthy stem about 5-6 inches long from the parent plant so that it becomes easy to propagate blueberries.
Choose an organic well-drained and moist potting mix for your plant. Put the cuttings in it.
At the time of spring, you will observe the growing roots in the plant.
Then you can transplant it to the garden area or the new container.

Softwood cuttings

At the time of early spring, you are required to choose a healthy stem about 6 inches long for the new season.
Remove leaves from the stem leaving 2-3 leaves to it only.
Do not let the cuttings get dry as they will not be propagated then.

Through Suckers:

When the bush grows shoots, then you can propagate blueberries through suckers by letting them grow for two seasons.
Then you have to divide them from the parent plant at the time of late fall or winter.
Make use of a sharp shovel to do so and gently dig about 8-12 inches deep in the ground around the sucker for moving its root stricture.
You have to trim its roots to equal the roots and shoots before transplanting them.
You can pot them or let them grow in this organic position before transplanting them for a season.
Plant them in a moist medium and a sheltered area for their growth.

Growing Tips for Propagating Blueberries

The ideal pH level of soil for berries lies between 4.5 to 5.0 which is slightly acidic.
Be cautious while choosing the right soil as clay soil is not suitable.
When you grow the berries in the container, you have to check their moisture by insertion a finger inside about n inches deep and if it’s dry, then you have to water them.
Feed your berries with general-purpose fertilizers so that they grow at a faster pace.
Lastly, mulching your berries is also essential. It will keep the weeds away from the plant.
